In some parts of Greece, the groom gifts the bride her wedding shoes. The Koumbaro (best man) delivers them to her on the wedding day while she’s getting ready, and then a scene plays out where the bride pretends they are too big.

The Koumbaro fills the shoes with money to fit the bride, and the unmarried bridesmaids write their names on the shoes’ soles. The names worn off the shoes by the end of the wedding day are supposedly the people who will marry soon.

Greek Orthodox wedding ceremony

If attending a Greek wedding, you’ll likely witness Greek Orthodox traditional customs and rituals. Over 98% of the country identifies with the faith, and weddings are one of its seven sacraments.

A Greek Orthodox wedding ceremony is a beautiful and sacred event steeped in tradition and symbolism. It usually occurs in an Orthodox church, a spectacular setting with unique artwork and design.

Unlike most ceremonies in the UK, Greek wedding guests aren’t already seated when the bride arrives at the church. Instead, they gather outside to greet her as she meets the groom at the church doors. The bride then walks down the aisle with the groom and her father, following the wedding party.

The wedding is split into two parts — the Service of Betrothal and the Service of the Crowning. Rituals in the sacrament are done three times to signify the Holy Trinity.

The service begins with lighting the candles and the Joining of the Hands. The groom and bride are each given a tapered candle (Lambathes), which is then lit to symbolise their willingness to receive Christ.

The Joining of the Hands involves the priest joining the couple’s right hands and saying prayers to grant the pair a peaceful, happy, and long life together. The engagement rings are repurposed as wedding rings, exchanged in the Service of Betrothal, and placed on the couple’s right hands.

One of the most iconic Greek wedding traditions is the Crowning of Stefana. During this part, the couple each wears a crown, usually made from olive leaves or flowers, joined together by a ribbon.

As the priest places them on the pair’s heads, God crowns them as king and queen of their homes and founders of a new generation.

Sacred scriptures are read before the groom and bride sip blessed wine from a cup. The priest then leads the couple in a ceremonial walk called the Dance of Isaiah, celebrating their first steps as husband and wife.

Finally, the priest removes the crowns and brings the book of the Holy Gospels down on the pair’s joined hands to remind them that only God can separate them.

Traditional Greek wedding food and drinks

Greek weddings are famous for their delicious and plentiful food and drink offerings. They reflect the country’s rich culinary heritage and are served abundantly to ensure no guest goes home hungry.

Pearls are the only gems not to come from the ground, making them highly prized, desirable items. They’re one of the most loved gems, symbolizing wisdom and attracting a calming aura.

What is a pearl?

Pearls are made up of small, crystalised forms of calcium carbonate, which has been deposited in layers. ‘Perfect’ pearls are usually round and smooth However, they can be found in many other shapes and colours. Where do pearls come from?

Pearls are found in molluscs, mostly oysters and mussels. In saltwater, you’ll find pearls in oysters, while in rivers and ponds, mussels produce the gemstone.

Pearls form part of the creatures’ defence system, intended to protect their fragile bodies from parasites. Oyster and mussel shells have a similar molecular makeup to pearls, both formed of layers of aragonite and conchiolin.

How are pearls made?

The process of making a pearl can take six months to several years. The mollusc must be of mature age, around three years old, to produce a pearl.

To start the process, a small foreign object (such as sand or food particles) makes its way into the mollusc. The creatures respond by producing a calcium carbonate secretion to protect themselves and reduce irritation.

Larger and higher-quality pearls come from older oysters and are called first-generation pearls. Most molluscs can produce up to three pearls in their lifetime.

After around three to four years of growth, the pearl usually reaches its optimum size and thickness. It’s then carefully harvested by the pearl cultivator. The pearl is evaluated to determine whether or not it is suitable for sale. Only a tiny fraction of cultivated pearls are good enough quality to sell to jewellers, making them a costly and rare gemstone to produce.

What are cultured pearls?

Many jewellery pieces contain cultured pearls. This means the pearl has been made with the aid of human intervention. The pearl is still produced by a living, productive mollusc, but in an environment where the living conditions have been carefully controlled. These types of pearls can be cultivated in seawater or freshwater bodies.

How to tell if a pearl is real

While imitation pearls are popular in costume jewellery, being easily replicated makes the gemstone a common victim of counterfeit pearls that are sold as the real thing.

Luckily, there are a few tests you can carry out to tell if a pearl is real.

Texture: Take the pearl and run it along the front of your tooth. If the gemstone is real or cultured, it should feel gritty.
Colour: Though pearls are thought of as pure white or cream-coloured, natural, higher-quality pearls will also contain a rose or ivory overtone.
Thickness: To test the thickness of the pearl, place it next to bright light and roll it around. If the pearl ‘blinks’ at you, they have a thinner nacre, which is a sign of a fake or lesser quality pearl.
Perfectness: Imitation pearls are often too perfect. Look for slight imperfections in the gemstone to tell if it’s real, including irregularities in shape and small blemishes.
Temperature: Real pearls are usually cool to the touch. Leave the pearls out for a few hours, then see how they feel in your hands. Fake pearls will remain at room temperature before warming up quickly, while genuine pearls will have a similar sensation to touching marble.

How much is a pearl worth?

The value of a pearl depends on many factors, including the size, shape, colour, and condition of the gemstone. Wild pearls are worth more than cultured pearls.

Freshwater pearls are usually the most affordable, with a classic strand of white pearls starting from $100. Rarer pearls, such as the Akoya and South Sea pearls, can sell for over £8,000 – a very large South Sea necklace could come to £82,000.

What do pearls symbolise?

The distinctive nature and appearance of pearls have made them prominent for centuries.

The watery origins and spherical shape of the pearl mean they’re often associated with the moon. Ancient Vedic texts state the pearl is born of the earth’s waters and heaven’s powers and is considered to be the daughter of the moon.

Some Western cultures connect the pearl to Venus, the goddess of love, who was also born from the ocean. Biblical stories depict pearls as the tears of Eve, formed when she was banished from the garden of Eden. Their rarity is also the reason behind the saying ‘pearls of wisdom’, originally a biblical term – when knowledge is shared, we must treasure it as we would a rare pearl.

Their rare and unique nature means pearls have long been associated with wealth. Before we knew how to culture pearls, they were incredibly hard to come by, only worn by the lucky few.

Chinese wedding tea ceremony

One of the most important and notable aspects of a Chinese wedding is the tea ceremony.

Even in modern Chinese weddings, the tea ceremony remains one of the most significant parts of the nuptials and is a chance for newlyweds to show respect to elders within their families.

What is the Chinese tea ceremony?

The Chinese tea ceremony takes place on the day of the wedding. During this part of the nuptials, the couple serves tea to their parents, in-laws, and other family members, symbolizing the union of the two families. The ceremony is usually conducted within the couple’s family homes and sees them kneel before their elders and serve them tea.

The history of the Chinese tea ceremony

The origins of the Chinese tea ceremony go as far back as the Tang dynasty, between 618-907 AD.

Tea has long been an important part of Chinese culture – when a woman marries and brings tea as part of her dowry, she is said to be showing her faithfulness and loyalty to one person.

There are no rules concerning which tea should be used in a Chinese tea ceremony, however red dates, lotus seeds, and lily are often added to the tea, symbolizing luck, fertility, and marriage longevity.

The bride’s family traditionally buys the teaware and cushions for the ceremony, with the ‘double happiness’ Chinese character printed on them to represent marriage.

The tea ceremony for the bride’s side usually takes place in the morning at her home, when the groom and his groomsmen arrive to come and collect her for the rest of the day. Then, the groom’s tea ceremony will take place. However, many now conduct the ceremony in one go for logistical reasons or combine the tea ceremony with the lunch banquet too.

Following the ceremony, parents will normally share their wise words with the couple before they go on to exchange their wedding rings and offer them red envelopes full of money, a symbol of good luck and fortune. The groom’s family will also offer the bride gold jewellery – it’s important for the bride to put these on straight away, as a gesture of respect.

Chinese wedding dress

While the Chinese tea ceremony may be one of the most iconic parts of a wedding in China, there are other customs Chinese couples usually uphold.

You’ll often also see the gowns adorned with gold, alongside images of the dragon and phoenix, which symbolize prosperity for the newlyweds.

The design of the frock varies depending on the region – northern Chinese brides typically wear a one-piece gown named Qipao(旗袍), while brides in southern China prefer a two-piece wedding dress, called a Qungua or QunKwa(裙褂).

Modern Chinese wedding dresses differ slightly in style, but they are still nearly always red. The significant colour and symbolic images are combined with Western wedding dress designs, featuring tight-fitting bodices and long, flowing trains.

The fascinating history and evolution of the wristwatch

For many of us, a wristwatch is part of our daily wardrobe. Waking up and strapping on our watches has become second nature, yet this fascinating piece of tech should never be taken for granted.

Wristwatches have an intriguing beginning and have undergone a range of practical and stylish evolutions over the years. To understand its origin is to appreciate the beauty of the wristwatch even more.

When were watches invented?

The concept of measuring time stretches way back to the Egyptians, over 5,000 years ago. The civilisation relied on the sun for these early clocks, using sundials to determine the time.

While today’s time tellers are much more advanced, the circular design of the Egyptian sundials has helped shape the appearance of modern watches.

The first watches to work without the help of the sun were known as water clocks. Later came the hourglass and the wheel clock, in the 14^th century.

While large clocks were visible to the ordinary population on church towers and in marketplaces, it wasn’t until the 15^th century that the watchmaking profession really started ticking along thanks to the introduction of the spiral spring.

Balance, and the discovery of the spiral spring, made the construction of more precise watches possible. The coil spring replaced the large pendulum used in the past, paving the way for smaller, more compact watches.

In 1673, Christiaan Huygens created a watch that utilised the spiral spring and balance, which was both small in size and portable.

When were wristwatches invented?

The first wristwatch is thought to have been invented in 1812 by Abraham-Louis Breguet, who produced a wristwatch for Napoleon’s sister, Queen Caroline Murat. A small timepiece was attached to the wrist with a strap.

Prior to this, most men carried their watches on a chain attached to their back pocket, while women often wore it around their necks.

After Breguet’s creation – and thanks to the Queen’s popularisation – wristwatches slowly became a part of everyday society. By the end of the 19^th century, wristwatches were a part of many women’s accessories collections.

To feminise them further, some had taken to attaching them to chains or ribbons, making them look like jewels.

When did wristwatches become popular?

It wasn’t until the 20^th century that both men and women began wearing wristwatches.

Up until this point, most men still preferred pocket watches – they had dramatically advanced over the years and had improved in accuracy.

The practicality of the pocket watch came into question alongside the advancement of other technologies. In 1904, Louis Cartier developed the first men’s wristwatch. His friend, flying legend Alberto Santos Dumont, had expressed a desire to continue flying his plane with both hands while also keeping an eye on the time, something he was unable to do with a pocket watch. Cartier created the Cartier Santos for him, still a central part of the series today.

Shortly after, the outbreak of the First World War further highlighted instances where hands-free tasks and timekeeping were vital. Even today, many watch series is clearly derived from a military perspective, equipped with things like navigation tools, readability in low light conditions, or scratch-resistance glass.

However, wristwatches were by no means reserved for military use, and quickly became admired by and popular among the civilian population.

In the 1920s, the first automatic, self-winding watch was developed. The success of the wristwatch was catapulted further by Rolex in 1926 when it released its waterproof Oyster case. To prove its waterproof capabilities, Rolex equipped swimmer Mercedes Gleitze with a Rolex as she tried to cross the English Channel. While the record attempt failed, the watch survived without damage.

The rise of quartz watches

Shortly after in the 1930s, the first electric-powered watches using quartz technology were developed.

However, they were expensive, bulky, and often only produced for scientific use. That all changed with the breakthrough of semiconductor technology.

Manufacturers including Seiko, Patek Philippe, and Junghans introduced their battery-powered table clocks. Later, the development of integrated circuits for divider stages allowed this to propel further – Japan especially developed a range of electric-powered watches that were much more accessible for the masses.

These electric powered wristwatches also excelled mechanical watches in terms of accuracy and affordability. In 1969, the Seiko Astron was the first electric-powered wristwatch that was available for sale in stores.

Quartz watches meant fewer parts, which meant they were less expensive for both manufacturers and buyers and could be produced in larger quantities.

Traditional mechanical companies, including Rolex, suffered greatly against the quartz boom, with many filing for bankruptcy.

The comeback of the mechanical watch

Thankfully, the mechanical watch market recovered in the 1980s.

Mechanical watches were easier to understand and actually appealed to certain clientele by sitting at the higher price segment.

‘Swiss made’ regained its relevance as quality assurance, and largely dominated the watch market. When it came to mechanical watches, craftmanship became respected once again.

Modern wristwatches

Nowadays, the best wristwatches are seen across multiple price segments and contain varying functionalities.

In fact, garnet is a group name for the silicate minerals almandine, pyrope, spessartine, grossular, andradite, mozambique, and uvarovite.

The history of garnet

There are garnet deposits all over the world, with some deposits being much rarer and smaller in size than others.

The major garnet producing areas are Africa, Russia, Pakistan, China, Brazil, and Canada. However, most jewellery designers use garnets mined in India.

The country leads the world in garnet production and has some of the world’s most abundant garnet mines, producing a deep red garnet stone that is popular on jewellery. India also promotes modern mining practices, and gemstone production is conflict-free.

What colour is garnet?

Although garnet is typically thought of as deep red colour, the garnet stone is found in a variety of colours.

Garnet is the collective name for a large group of silicate minerals, all with distinct colour properties. While the most commonly found are the classic red variety, you will also see orange, pink, green, black, and even honey brown garnets.

Each garnet has the same main chemical formula, but the elements added to this formula define the colour of the minerals, thus creating diversity within the group.

The two main groups in the garnet stone family are pyralpites and calcic. Pyralpites are usually red in colour due to the presence of iron, while the calic stones get their colour from impurity elements. This means they can come in other colours, including green, pink, black, etc.

Garnet is also said to improve the sexual energy of the wearer, and even fight against fatigue and apathy.

One of the most fascinating stories surrounding garnet comes from Greek mythology. Garnets were often associated with pomegranates, the only food that goddess Persephone ate when she was kidnapped by Hades and trapped in his Underworld.

Because of this, the garnet stone has come to stand for the safe return of a friend or loved one. Garnets were often exchanged between friends as tokens that they would meet again and always be bound together.

How strong is garnet?

Garnet is a mildly strong gemstone, according to the Mohs scale of mineral hardness. The scale was created by Friedrich Mohs in 1812 and is still used today as a standard way to measure the ‘hardness’ of minerals.

Diamond is at the top with a hardness of ten, while garnet comes slightly lower at 6.5 to 7.5.

What is garnet used for?
